Mont Blanc Writing Instruments

The quientessential penmaker, often seen gracing the hands of business professionals the world over.

Founded by the stationer Claus-Johannes Voss, the banker Alfred Nehemias and the engineer August Eberstein in 1908, the company began as the Simplo Filler Pen company producing up-market pens in the Schanzen district of Hamburg.

Their first model was the Rouge Et Noir in 1909 followed in 1910 by the pen that was later to give the company its new name, Montblanc. The first pen, a fountain pen known as the Meister stuck (English: "Masterpiece," the name used for export) was produced in 1924.

Easily identifiable by the logo - a white stylised six-pointed star with rounded edges, inspired by the snowcapped peak of France’s biggest mountain Mont Blanc. The number '4810', the mountain's height in metres, is also a commonly recurring theme in Mont Blanc's branding and products.

Converse All Stars

First produced in 1917 and relatively unchanged since, you don't get much more iconic and classic than the Converse All Star. The neutral shades are just about wearable with anything casual.

Following their first model, a tennis shoe which began life in 1908, Converse released the worlds first basketball shoe - The Converse All Star. In 1921 Chuck Taylor rocked up, made a few tweaks with the traction, added some ankle support and in doing so brought to market the "Chuck Taylor All Star".

My pair are 10 years old now and still going strong. One of the best £30 purchases I made as a student.

Larger than previous models at 44mm it's definitely a statement piece.

Temps were rather cold mind and at times i found myself wishing i had a Moncler. Something i've been lusting after for a while. So i've just bought myself a new ride and i'll be posting pics up and writing more about it when i pick it up in a couple of weeks. So excited! In the meantime i get to decide what saddle i put on it and as far as i'm concerned theres only one choice when it comes to manufacturer - Brooks.

For over almost a century and a half, Brooks England has been producing quality leather saddles with rich tradition and classic styling. Back in 1865, John Boultbee Brooks left his hometown of Hinckley in Leicestershire with just £20 in his pocket where he headed for Birmingham and in 1866 he established a business in horse harnesses and general leather goods in Great Charles Street under the name JB Brooks & Co. In 1878, the unfortunate death of Mr Brooks’ horse led to a stroke of inspiration. Unable to afford another horse, he borrowed a bicycle in order to commute to work. But he found the seat so uncomfortable that he vowed to do something about it. On 28 October 1882, Mr Brooks filed his first saddle patent.

I thought i'd share a recent acquirement with you, purely because it's delightful. To protect my SLR and lenses i'm now kicking a Billingham Hadley in the large size. It fits adequately my Nikon body, a wide angle 11-16mm, 70-35mm midrange and 70-210mm telephoto, plus leaves me a bit of room for a lightweight top and even my laptop down the back!

The traditional fishing style of this bag really appeals to me and is very similar to the Brady Bag which i've blogged about in the past, the material is a little thinner than my Brady but it still feels bomb proof and i'm certain it will hold out for many years. Instead of the traditional khaki colour though i opted for the slightly more conversative colour scheme of Sage and Tan, which tends to go better with the coats i wear as well as summer knits and tops.

Established in England in 1973 with a tradition in fishing bag manufacturing, Billingham switched to just making camera bags in 1978 after the company realised that New York photographers were using the bags to carry their camera kit and so a gap in the market was exploited.

I already own a Critical Mass, the big brother version. It's one of the sturdiest bags i own and has put up with some serious abuse over the years. As i've mentioned a few times on this blog i like to climb rocks for a hobby. In fact that's an understatement. I like to rock climb a LOT and it's way more than a hobby! It dictates my being, it's a way of life and it allows me to travel to some beautiful and sometimes remote places, often roughing it and crossing rugged terrain to get to that magical boulder or rock face. I've rock climbed for over 15 years, since a youth, and is possibly one of the reasons why i obsess and have a keen interest in all things built solidly and that have a practical purpose.

I digress. The whole point of this post is to talk about the Patagonia Half Mass and i seem to have rambled a bit.

Anyway, i'm considering buying this bag to use as a camera bag for my SLR and lenses. It contains a laptop sleeve as well which i think would be extremely useful and the size and design would mean i could also fit my mobile, notebook, pen and a top or jacket in if need be. I know the pack is going to last a heck of a long time, carry my gear well, put up with being tossed about if i'm out taking climbing shots and also look pretty cool too. In addition Patagonia is an inspirational company, with a hard stance on environmental issues. It basically flies the flag in the outdoor industry for green living.

Leatherman

I've always wanted a Leatherman, i'm not even totally sure why as i don't have much use for one. My trusty French Opinel knife happily sits in my climbing/walking pack only to be dissapointingly used for less serious endevours, such as cutting bread and cheese on a picnic. Non the less, Leatherman's look useful. Oh and pretty stylish too, especially when holstered in a decent leather pouch. They're the type of item that looks well cool when 20+ years old and when too much cheese has tarnished the blade.

A bit of history for you; The Leatherman Tool Group was founded by Timothy Leatherman, a mechanical engineering graduate. Leatherman came up with the idea of a "Boy Scout Knife" during a road trip with his wife in 1975, when he was unable to use his pocket knife to fix his repeatedly malfunctioning car. See yourself in this situation? me neither, still i think one is going on the Xmas list.

Well Dressed - The cast of Yes Minister

One of my favourite sources of inspiration has to be the classic satirical (read sartorial) 1980's sitcom 'Yes Minister'. Set in the Administrative Affairs office in Whitehall Jim Hacker, Sir Humphrey Appleby and Nigel Hawthorn play the utterly hilarious roles, and always do so appearing exquisitely dressed. Classic style rules apply; oxford shoes, navy pinstripes and grey chalk-stripe flannel suits, plain shirting, perfect tie combinations and beautifully paired pocket squares. You get the picture.

I was lucky enough to have my other half take me out last night for some rather devine Spanish Tapas and to see the brilliant musical 'Quadrophenia'. For those of you that are unfamiliar, Quadrophenia is a film about the mod scene in the 1960's based on music from the Who's 1973 album of the same title.

Anyway, to cut to the chase, the styling was awesome. POW checked pants, chelsea boots, desert boots, tailored shirting, long sleeved polo shirts, bowler shirts, slim fitting blazers, military jackets, fishtail parkas, trilbys, sunglasses, tonnes of attitude and seriously cool scooters. And if you're a Who fan, the music was utterly incredible to boot.

With Wimbledon feaver recently taking centre stage it felt fitting to celebrate an established manufacturer with a rich history in tennis and who in 1924 kitted the tennis stars of the day taking them to 13 championships.

In 1916, the Keds brand was introduced by the U.S. Rubber Company. With the demand for rubber-soled footwear increasing, they decided to produce an entirely new rubber-soled shoe to become the first national athletic and lifestyle footwear brand.

At this time, the shoes were called sneakers, a term invented in late 1916 by Keds advertising agency because the rubber soles made the shoes quiet. Worn by fashion icons, leading actresses, Olympic soccer players and scores of National and International tennis champions, Keds has been a symbol of classic style and performance innovation throughout the 20th century.

So i'm hopefully out surfing later today and it's reminded me of an early surf inspiration, a film called 'Morning of the Earth. I remember watching this way before i started surfing and it was a major influence in me wanting to get out there. The film, for me, captures the escense of surfing - excitement, freedom and expression.

Surf culture and surf style is seriously cool. I'm loving the thong sandles and square aviators in this 70's photo.

Cars- Land Rover Defender

I'm not sure you could call this a car, it's more like a tank. These things are solid and practically indestructable. Commonly used in agriculture, industry, expeditions and in the military the Defender is being increasingly bought for private use and the most modern versions spec'd to accomodate this new trend being complete with air con, leather seats, full electrics, in car entertainment etc. I've always said that if i end up owning a farm house in the country then i'd get one of these, or indeed just a house with a muddy drive - any excuse really!

A British four wheel driver off road vehicle, the modern Defender is a bi-product of the original Land Rover Series 1 launched in 1948, it uses the basic underpinnings of a robust ladder frame chassis and aluminium body with many different customised versions being available.

In true Style Essentials celebration the Defender is still largely hand assembled, benefiting from no unibody structure, all its main body panels and sub-assemblies simply bolt together. This feature is what i love about the defender, all those visable bolts look fantastic. There's no wondering why it's the perfect vehicle for hard graft.

I consider myself very lucky to live 45 minutes from the Peak District and i try to make the most of getting out weekends, and sometimes mid-week, climbing, walking and running - passions i've had since a very young age.

A pleasant walk at the weekend in the dale of Water-Cum-Jolly got me thinking that i don't actually kick a decent rucsack. The one i use for walks is a ultra high tech moutain marathon affair, which whilst functions well, actually looks a little too flash.

A bag that caught my eye a while ago, which i think fits the bill perfectly is made by hand courtesy of Lake District company Aiguille Alpine. Their sacks are all produced in super hard wearing 1000D texturised nylon fabric with reinforced triple stiched seams, certainly sure to last many many years.

Decent photos on the net are limited but the top one is the pack in mind and the ones below examples of a neat day sack.

I like this shot, it's got great atmosphere and with the bright light shining through it looks to be a lovely day. I also like the smart casual appearences of those in the room - slacks, polo shirts, lightweight knits and a rather fine and interesting collection of hats. The main subjects of the shot are Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, two great golfers of their time, shot in 1965, and by the looks of things at the golf club. Who wants to bet on what they're talking about...

Pantherella Socks

Often cited as the best sock makers in the world. Well, that's certainly quite a claim and i'm not totally sure on how people come to that conclusion but there's no denying, they do make rather good socks.

Set up in Staffordshire in 1937 as the Midland Hosiery company, the firm did not adopt the Pantherella name until 1945, after owner Louis Goldshmit was able to persuade a local machine makers to build him a sock making machine and business began to gather weight.

Their trademark hand linked toe box (similar to the hand seam linking process John Smedley use) helps create an exceptionally comfortable seam.

Nowadays, production has shifted to their Leicester factory where they still continue to produce excellent quality socks.

I've been considering experimenting with colour in my socks for some time now so watch this space. I'll be sure to get some photos up.

I absolutely love Grado when it comes to headphones and think the design is a true classic, the fact that it remains very little changed exacerbates this.

I must be honest though, the only thing that's put me off buying a pair in the past is the fact that they're 'open air' so you end up with sound leakage and piss people off, not cool, but at least you look good hey... For this reason I prefer sound isolating buds, but if i can ever find an opportunity for owning a pair of open air's it'll be Grado all the way!

I've just stumbled accross this great article, complete with example, of what the famous Church's repair process entails. As well be known Church's will take your tired and beaten up old friends after years of use, deconstruct them, run any repairs that need doing and restore them on the original last they were made from, to a practically new condition. This painstaking and loving process, all by a skilled craftsmans hand, is something that enticed me to wear Church's shoes in the first place and seeing this example has cemented that reasoning further. I'm simply astonished at what has been achieved.

The term Monkstraps derives traditionally from their similarity with the the buckle fastenings found on monks sandles.

Love them or hate them, when worn with slim fitting trousers i think they look great. Personally, it took me quite a while to get my head round them, initially not particularly being fond, but i've seen so many examples now that i think when worn right they can look amazing. My personal preference would be to wear them as casuals in brown leather or suede and i'd probably spare them from the office.

These examples by John Lobb are just exceptional. Maybe one day...

Horn-Rimmed Spectacles

In a sense i am glad i'm visually impaired, it's a good excuse to wear glasses and have a genuine reason to. Of the many different types of frames available i think the horn-rimmed are most appealing.

Horn-rimmed refers to the original material that these types of glasses were originally made from, which was horn or shell. Nowadays, celluloid is the most commonly used material but the name has obviously stayed. The glasses became popular in the states in the 20's because of actor Harold Lloyd, who wore them frequently during roles and they have continued to remain a common choice throughout the years.

Brown and black are the classic colours for horn-rimmed spectacles, however tortoiseshell and clear frames are also pretty popular. The choice of colour should compliment skin and hair colour and also match the style of what you wear.

Shirt Collars - The Club Collar

The club collar has its origins firmly set in the English public school system and amongst Oxbridge colleges. You might also hear it being referred to as the Eton collar due to it traditions in forming part of Etons school uniform.

To be honest, it's rarely seen here in the UK, which is certainly a plus point and more than one good reason for liking it. There's nothing better than being a little different.

The great thing i think about the club collar is that it draws attention subtly. Character is imediately conveyed by the wearer and curiosity engaged.

With regards to how to wear a club collared shirt, my take on it would be to wear it tieless and pair it up with a blazer and chinos or jeans, with brogues (boat shoes with the last shirt), for a casual preppie look.

Roberts Radio

In 1932 Harry Roberts, founded the Roberts Radio Company in partnership with Leslie Bidmead, and they quickly established an excellent reputation for their high-quality portables. Financed entirely from earnings, the Company's growth has been steady rather than spectacular.

This delightful model from Roberts, built in wood and then lined, has kept its classic look since inception in the 1950's and still looks utterly fantastic. Keeping up to date with technology it now includes a 120 hour battery life as well as a mains power alternative, DAB rotary wavelength tuning, RDS station name display, a stereo line in socket for your iPod, headphone socket and decent portability thanks to its carry handle.

As it's also available in a variety of different colours, it's sure to brighten up any room. My choice would be the British Racing Green option, although Piano Black is rather dashing.

The Fred Perry Polo Shirt

Born in Stockport, Cheshire in 1909, Frederick John Pery was an English Tennis and Table Tennis player and 3 time Wimbledon Champion during the 1930's.

In the late 1940s, Perry was approached by Tibby Wegner, an Austrian footballer, who came up with an idea to produce a sports shirt that Perry could endorse by wearing on centre court. It was to be made from white knitted cotton pique with short sleeves and would feature a buttoned open neck collar. Launched at Wimbledon in 1952, the Fred Perry polo shirt was an immediate success.

The brand is still distinguishable by its laurel logo, which appears on the left breast. Interestingly, it was Fred Perry that first began to stitch logos onto their shirts, as opposed to ironing the logo on, as was the case with Lacoste at the time.

The Perry polo shirt was only available in white until the late 50s when the mods began to integrate it into their look. In doing so they started demanding a wider variety of colour-ways, which was when Perry expanded their range. I grew up with my father wearing polos a great deal, mostly Lacoste and Fred Perry, so there's a small amount of influence in my liking of polo shirts coming from the old man there. I also went through a big mod phase as a teenager, as some of you may recall me mentioning in one of my earlier blog posts, which almost certainly contributed to my now tastes in style. So i guess with both of these factors playing such a pivotal role it's no surprise that they now form a significant part of my typical summer wardrobe. They're much smarter than t-shirts in my opinion, and equally as flexible.

Furniture - The Chesterfield Sofa

I've always had huge admiration for the Chesterfield sofa, in particular the Essex style in burgundy leather, as shown above. For me it's a classic and stylish piece of furniture that brings shear elegance to the room it stands in. A good example will last a lifetime if looked after.

The Chesterfield sofa is similar in construction and style to a typical settee but slightly larger and with the arms at the same height as the back. Another obvious key feature is the deep buttoned upholstery, which can be set in a variety of different materials such as rich velvets, leather, chenille and patterned fabrics. Designs also typically incorporate rich ornate carving and bold curvaceous designs including cabriole legs with scrolled toes and pottery castors, incurved arms and caned backs. And many different wonderful types of wood are used such as rosewood, walnut, beech wood and mahogany.

It's difficult to trace back the history of the Chesterfield due to the shear length of time it has been around, some say that it stems from the town Chesterfield, from where the design was first conceived, however others will state that it was infact the Earl of Chesterfield who was responsible for designing and commisioning the style and it's name was marked in his honour. Whatever the reason, it is certainly a "Style Essential".

Dean tragically reminds us that life really is too short having only lived until the age of 24.

The Leather Jacket

There are only a handful of options that i consider acceptable when it comes to leather jackets and i'll address each of them in turn, starting with cuts and then a few examples of pieces i particularly like.

The appropriate scenario for which to wear one should be limited to times when casual is acceptable and during activities where you can get away with such rebellious attire. Because of this, these events are limited to include beers with the lads, an evening drive in the vintage convertible or when out on the motorbike etc. You get the picture...

They are best worn fitted, in plain black or brown, with no large logos and with a white shirt or t-shirt underneath, combined with denim jeans and boots. Leather jackets shouldn't look new, if you opt to buy new then look for something that's been made to look broken in. Second hand shops provide a perfect outlet but pay particular attention to fit. Leather is designed to last so a good investment will see you through for many years to come.

Biker Jacket:

Originally invented by Irving Schott in 1928 and called the "Perfecto". The jacket was sold by Harley Davidson and produced by Irving's company Schott NYC. However, it wasn't until Marlon Brando wore a biker jacket in 'The Wild One' that the jacket became true rebel attire. Smarter, more modern alternatives, are now often found with tab collars, which are a much better bet, unless you're keen to resemble someone out of Grease.

Bomber Jacket:

The leather bomber jacket, also known as the flight jacket was originally created for pilots in the during the first world war and was known as the A-1 jacket. The A-2 Flying Jacket was the replacement which was adopted in 1927 and it became the standard issue by the US Army Air Corps in 1931. This jacket is a classic and is sometimes referred to as a "Bomber" jacket even though its use wasn't limited to pilots or bomber crews. The jacket is characterised by knitted rib cuffs and hem which fit snugly around the wrist and waist. It traditionally had a shirt style flip collar but you'll find lots of variations on collars now, most notably the ribbed collar which i think looks pretty sharp.

Established out of a basement in the late 1920's Italian company Tod's are now regarded famous for their unique driving shoes, which host the trademark 133 pebbles on the sole named "Gommino". The idea of this signature shoe was born in the late 1970's in an attempt to create a shoe that could be worn in a professional, casual or elegant environment.

Despite them looking as though they wouldn't last a single British rainy day, they still look devine and would actually make an a great pair of lounging slippers, or perhaps for sporting on those guaranteed dry weather days.

I was hugely inspired by the mod culture and style of the 1960's when i was growing up and listened a great deal to the likes of The Who and The Small Faces - classic mod bands of the era. I desperately wanted a scooter and the Lambretta Li series was high on the list of candidates, just like Jimmy's in the film "Quadrophenia". Unfortunately, living with my parents, they wouldn't allow it.

As far as the Lambretta story goes, it was in 1922 that Italian Ferdinando Innocenti first built his steel-tubing factory in Rome and then in 1931, he took the business to Milan where he built a larger factory producing seamless steel tubing employing about 6,000. During WWII the factory was heavily bombed and destroyed, however it's said that whilst surveying the ruins, Innocenti saw the future of cheap, private transport and decided to produce a motor scooter, which could compete on cost and weather protection against the ubiquitous motorcycle. The Lambretta scooter was born.

Gingham Check

The name Gingham originates from Indonesia. The material was originally imported as a striped fabric in the 17th century but was woven into the check pattern as we know today in the mid 18th century when it was being produced in the cotton mills of Manchester.

As you've probably noticed this is the second blog about checks in the past week and that's, well to be honest, because i'm feeling summery! The Gingham check is a fantastic casual summer pattern and works wonderfully in shirting. What it does well is it conveys a smart and youthful appearance, particularly when coupled with chinos or jeans. Teamed up with a plaided leather belt, driving shoes and a sport jacket and you know you've scored.

Montegrappa is the oldest Italian manufacturer of fine writing instruments, founded as "Manifattura pennini d'oro e penne stilografiche" ("Maker of gold nibs and fountain pens") in 1912. Their products are still manufactured in their original factory, in the same historic building, on the bank of the River Brenta, in one of the most picturesque areas of the historic town of Bassano del Grappa in the prosperous north-eastern part of Italy.

Their pens are just incredible.

Prince of Wales Check

I do like the Prince of Wales check pattern. The term is often widely but wrongly applied to the Glen Urquhart check and other similar coloured overchecks, which should not be confused. The POW could be said to have been popularised by the Duke when he was Prince, however it was infact his grandfather Kind Edward VII that designed it when he held the title of The Prince of Wales, to don for his shootings at Abergeldie House on Scotland’s Deeside. It is of similar pattern to the Glen Urquhart but nearly twice its size on the repeat.
