Levi Strauss established himself in the production of blue jeans for workwear in New Hampshire, USA in 1873 after he learned of miners complaining about their cotton trousers tearing too easily. Strauss teamed up with tailor Jacob Davis, and they started producing rugged overalls to sell to the miners originally from hemp sailcloth, which were practically impossible to split - and the rest is history.
